Peo Lekare - the cybersite against cyberharassment, cyberbullying and such.
October 23rd, 2008Welcome! This website is for everyone named Lekare in Sweden, but it’s real reason of existence is for me, Per Otto Lekare (also called Peo Lekare). This website is set up to tell the truth about me. I’m all about justice and against cyberstalking. According to Wikipedia, cyberstalking is a way people use to harass, hurt or otherwise damage people through the Internet:
Cyberstalking is the use of the Internet or other electronic means to stalk someone.
It has been defined as the use of information and communications technology, particularly the Internet, by an individual or group of individuals, to harass another individual, group of individuals, or organization. The behavior includes false accusations, monitoring, the transmission of threats, identity theft, damage to data or equipment, the solicitation of minors for sexual purposes, and gathering information for harassment purposes. The harassment must be such that a reasonable person, in possession of the same information, would regard it as sufficient to cause another reasonable person distress.
I actually had an entry in Wikipedia (the Swedish version), since I worked as a journalist in Sweden. I had, unfortunately, to have the entry deleted since someone of faulty intellect/missing mental faculties filled my entry with irrelevant, false, defamatory and libellous information. Wikipedia has one inherent advantage - which unfortunately is also it’s disadvantage: anyone can write anything about anything.
In Sweden, false and difamatory information fall within the defamation laws. To denounce anyone for defamation is not hard, even though one receives threats. Defamation laws in Sweden are all about what you can’t write about people. In law, defamation (also called calumny, libel, slander, and vilification) is the communication of a statement that makes a false claim, expressly stated or implied to be factual, that may give an individual, business, product, group, government or nation a negative image. Slander refers to a malicious, false, and defamatory statement or report, while libel refers to any other form of communication such as written words or images.
For defamation, you can be sentenced to maximum 2 years in prison. In Sweden, there is a law designed to protect people in general against these kind of situations. It’s called the “Personal Data Act”. This law prohibits any use of names or pictures (unless called for by government) as well as any health related issues being spread to the public. Breaches of this law lead to a maximum of 2 years in prison as well. So a worst case scenario for anyone that breaches these laws is 4 years in prison. Even though you in Sweden get out after 50% of the time (supposedly for good behavior), 2 years hard time can be tough. Especially if you’re a single mother or so.
In addition to this you can add eventual economic restitution for losses due to these kind of situations.
